Square Enix’s fictional character Lightning has come a long way since being conceptualized many years ago. Originally the stoic, bordering on grumpy, protagonist of the Final Fantasy XIII series of games, she has since become one of the franchise’s more popular characters, continuing to appear in other Square Enix properties and media. However, her next appearance may be the most exciting one yet.
Lightning is set to appear as a model in Louis Vuitton’s upcoming SERIES 4 ad campaign, which showcases items from the label’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection. In all honestly, it does seems like an odd choice given her characterization as a tough-as-nails, sword-wielding heroine. But no one can deny her distinct look and purposely crafted physical beauty.
Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, who has at least a passing interest in anime and gaming works, recently posted a handful of media related to the campaign on his Instagram account. To some gamers, the whole concept may sound bizarre and perhaps rightfully so. But for my part, I was literally blown away when I first heard of this collaboration. My favourite fashion label and a JRPG character thrown together for the purposes of fashion? Yes, please!
This is not the first time Lightning has been associated with a luxury brand. Years ago, she appeared in pieces from Prada’s 2012 menswear line. But the upcoming SERIES 4 campaign is far and away more significant than the former’s magazine spread. It has not only made waves in gaming circles but has also caught the attention of the fashion world and general news outlets.
I’m so beyond excited to see the full extent of this project next year and hope it opens the door to more video game and fashion collaborations!
